  LANKA LIONS Vs CSC

MATCH REPORT – by Uresh Perera

Dear Members, Supporters & Friends,

They say all good things happen when you have worked hard as team, prepared and played the sport in the true spirit of the game.

This is exactly what Singapore Lanka Lions Cricket Club achieved last Sunday when they beat the Ceylon Sports Club by a huge margin of 168 runs and sealed a 10 point victory. The Lions, as we are usually referred to, have now amassed 115 points taking untouchable lead with 2 more games still to play with 20 points potentially in the offering (See Table below).

It was a hot & humid day and unfavourable for any sport let alone full day of cricket. The Lions won the toss and decided to bat first and lost the openers very early into the game. No.3 Batsman and Captain Chaminda Ruwan  along with Buddihika Mendis put on a decent partnership before both of them got out.  Sanjaya aka Ganga was in a upbeat mood that day and hammered the ball all over the park scoring a magnificent century (110 in 92 balls) under extremely difficult hot conditions which included 7 x 4’s and 5 towering 6’s. The only other partner to give him company was our new KID in town Amila K. Amila played a classy knock of 26 and got out trying to pull a difficult ball.

Lions scored 263 runs and were bowled out in the last over.

CSC going into bat had a tough job on their hands and they never really were in the game. Other than their opener Manish who scored 45 runs and one more tail ender with 10 runs none of them got into double figures and were bowled out for 95 runs. Game was played in true spirit by both the teams and both Saad from CSC and Chaminda from Lions led all the way from the front to have a good game of cricket.

The highlight of the Lions performance in the field was bowling from our own superstar Harshan who bowled brilliantly to capture 5 wickets for just 6 runs. He bowled with good pace and aggression and removed their top scorer as well as 4 more wickets ending with figures of 5 overs – 2 maidens – 6 runs – 5 wickets and also took a good run out to end the match. So all in all brilliant day for both Harshan and Ganga. Buddhika took the price wicket of Saad for a duck and diminished the only hope opposition had a go at us during the middle of the innings.
