Lanka Lions recently hosted Sri Lankan test cricketers Kumar Dharmasena, Avishka Gunawardene, Romesh Kaluwitharana and Nuwan Zoysa to dinner at Clark Quay. The Sri Lankan cricketers were in Singapore for a brief stopover on their way to Los Angeles to participate in a 20:20 Tournament. "Kalu" recalled when he had played both in Singapore and Malaysia . In Singapore during the Singer Cup in 1996 (held soon after Sri Lanka won the world cup) and in Malaysia in 1995 when he and Sanath Jayasuriya played at the Kuantan Sixers.

Despite not having played cricket in a while, the High Commissioner batted in the nets with great aptitude. His commitment was such that there was even an on field collision with one of the best cricketers in Singapore , national cricketer and Lanka Lions coach Buddhika Mendis, when they both attempted a catch!
We trust Mr. Rathnavale enjoyed the training session and hope to see him at future sessions whenever his busy schedule permits. It would also be great to see the High Commissioner play cricket regularly and take the field in Lanka Lions colours.
Lanka Lions also hope that more High Commissioners, especially those from cricketing nations, follow his example and participate in cricket events to help promote the sport in Singapore .
